Across our country and here in Iowa, we see frequent attacks on fundamental rights: civil rights, bodily autonomy, and freedom of speech. It is past time to stop mere advocacy and take concrete action to protect these rights. One of my biggest critiques of the status quo is the reluctance of officials to stand strong on their beliefs without folding to political convenience; it’s a credibility issue that fails their constituents.I believe in the simple principle: "Your right to swing your fist ends where another person's nose begins." Our laws should protect people from harm, not police feelings.<h4>LGBTQ+ Rights: Love is Love</h4>No one is trying to "turn" anyone else gay. If a husband and wife can share a kiss in public, so can anyone else. Transgender Iowans want the same things we all do: to support their families, access healthcare without financial ruin, and live with respect. They belong in sports consistent with their gender identity; studies show trans women do not have an unfair advantage and are not overrepresented among top athletes. This isn't about biology—it's about dignity.<h4>Women's Rights: Protect Bodily Autonomy</h4>I am pro-choice because it is both the right and the popular position. Every state that has put abortion rights on the ballot has voted to protect them. Yet in Iowa, dangerous laws are causing harm: women are facing permanent damage or even death, we've lost OBGYNs and medical workers, and young families are leaving. Now, online extremists are targeting women's right to vote. We must lock in these protections and not budge an inch.<h4>Immigration Rights: A Path to Dignity</h4>Comprehensive immigration reform (Mass Amnesty) is more popular than mass deportation. Immigrants built this country, but we’ve seen federal agents terrorize communities, even murder, over paperwork. Meanwhile, the process takes decades, and employers who exploit undocumented workers get a slap on the wrist. We need efficient, responsible background checks and a clear path to status. This protects workers from slave wages and strengthens labor rights for everyone. Iowa should become a sanctuary state, ending local collaboration with ICE attacks on our neighbors. As one of the few states not in what the ACLU calls "constitution-free zones," we deserve basic protections, not having people attacked at their place of work.<h4>Labor Rights: Restore Worker Power</h4>Iowa’s so-called "right-to-work" laws are a lie that only protects an employer's right to fire you without cause. Unions are the backbone of the 40-hour work week, weekends, and fair wages. We need stronger protections for unions, easier organizing processes, and strict penalties for companies that break labor laws. It’s time to tip the scales back in favor of workers.When did it become radical to say, "treat others how you want to be treated"? Why is a dignified life under attack by ultra-wealthy corporations? Iowa's childcare system is broken and unaffordable. This crisis isn't just a family issue or a harsh critique of "pro-life" politicians. It is an economic emergency that is pushing parents out of the workforce, and the limited options add to the reasons young families leave their home state. The Problem: An Unaffordable System That Fails Families &amp; Our EconomyDevestating Costs: Full-time childcare now rivals a mortgage payment for Iowa families, costing more than $10,000 a year per child on average. This forces impossible choices between a paycheck and staying home to care for your kids.Workforce Collapse: Parents, especially mothers, are being forced to leave their jobs or reduce hours because they cannot find or afford quality care. This shrinks our workforce, hurts local businesses, and drags down our economy. This investment would ensure stable, high-quality care for our children and create dignified jobs that keep people and families in our communities. Yet, while Iowa once led the nation, our schools have fallen to the middle of the pack and continue to slip. Today, only 52% of our elementary students are reading at grade level. We cannot accept this decline.The core problem is clear: our commitment has wavered. Public funds are being diverted from our neighborhood schools, harming the education of the vast majority of Iowa's children. Kris will fight to refocus our priorities on the public good.<h3>Kris's Plan: Putting Public Schools and Iowa Families First</h3>Kris will champion a multi-pronged approach to restore Iowa's educational leadership and support working families.<ol><li>Fully Invest in Our Public Schools: Kris will ensure our public schools have the resources they need: strong after-school programs, mental health counselors, nurses, and smaller class sizes. He will integrate student voices into decisions that affect their education and fully supports embedding the ISEA Bill of Teacher Rights in the state constitution.</li><li>End the Private School Voucher Drain: Kris will fight to end the voucher program that funnels public dollars to private, for-profit institutions. While neighboring states move toward $15, studies show a true Iowa living wage is now near $20/hour. The promised "good-paying jobs and philanthropy" have not materialized. Iowa's water quality efforts rely on a voluntary, incentive-based framework. This system has failed. We see the consequences in significant runoff from industrial-scale agriculture, where corporate profits are prioritized over our shared resources.The Problem: Profit Over Public Health:Industrial Agriculture &amp; Runoff: Driven by subsidies for ethanol and taxpayer-backed crop insurance, corporate farming practices lead to soil degradation. This creates a harmful cycle that requires more fertilizer, which in turn worsens chemical and nutrient runoff into our rivers and drinking water.CAFO Contamination: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) generate massive amounts of waste, having "chickenized" large quantities of livestock. Manure is harvested from these sites and sprayed on to nutrient depleted land, creating a destructive feedback loop that incentivizes more corn production, more fertilizer, and more runoff into our water resources. Leaks and runoff from CAFOs put dangerous levels of nitrogen into our water, contributing to serious public health risks, including higher cancer rates.Additional Threats: Iowa's coal plants and the proposed data centers present further risks, from coal runoff to the immense water demands for cooling systems, which threaten both water quality and supply.The Kris Williams Solution: Accountability &amp; Sustainable ActionAs someone with a degree in Sustainability, I know that ignoring a problem does not solve it. We must increase water quality monitoring and transition to proven solutions.End the Voluntary Approach: We need enforceable regulations and penalties, including meaningful fines, for polluters who violate the public trust for private gain. End the process of "socialized risks with privatized gains".Invest in Sustainable Agriculture: We will actively support farmers who adopt soil-health practices like food-based crop rotations and cover crops, which dramatically reduce runoff. This transition also brings broad benefits: lower grocery prices, economic self-reliance against federal tariff wars, reduced food imports, and new jobs in diversified manufacturing. Most importantly, it gives our children access to locally grown, quality produce. Hold Wealthy Polluters Accountable: The social contract has been broken by large corporations. It is time to demand accountability through strict regulation, enforcement, and penalties for those who contaminate our water. This includes cracking down on corporations that break laws by exploiting foreign labor with slave wages and wage theft, practices that target and depress wages for all Iowa workers.Clean water is not a luxury; it is a fundamental right for every Iowan. We will fight to protect it.
